Anderson 4/5/12 Live Recap: Love Behind Bars
Today, Anderson tries to understand why women seek love behind bars. these amazing women are on the show to share their love and support for their male pen pals who’s serving time in prison. To know more about their stories, make sure to keep it glued only here on Nerdles!
The show begins with Jordan van der Sloot, who is behind bars for killing a girl in Peru. Now, a doctor named Mary Hamer claims to be his guardian angel. In June 2010, she contacted his attorney to get in touch with Jordan, despite knowing all the details of his crimes. She believed that she felt a connection to the alleged murderer because she says he suffers from post traumatic stress disorder. She says she can connect to the suffering Jordan is going through. She feels compassion for this young man, and that is why she wants to help him. She’s given about $100,000 to his attorney to pay for his legal fees, and as an extension of her help. I wonder if she would want to help me, too!
She feels that prison doesn’t rehabilitate people, and she’s taken this concern up to the President Obama, and the president of Aruba, too. She’s saying that this is her offer to society to help them with their suffering over the van der Sloot case. Anderson says not everyone is suffering, but the victim’s families are. She’s calling this the “Ghandi Project”, by offering to take Jordan in her home, to rehabilitate him under her rules and methods. She says she’s not romantically attracted to him, but feels to be his spiritual adviser. She says that “violence is a learned behavior”, learned from society and his environment, which she believes may have caused Jordan to lie and to do these crimes. Anderson, together with everyone else, is so confused with why a radiologist from Florida would take interest to be a guardian angel of a murderer in Peru.
An audience asks if Mary is just looking for her 5 minutes of fame, having sought out a high profile killer. She says she stands up for those who are oppressed and persecuted, and is not looking to be famous. She’s been in contact with everyone involved in van der Sloot’s case, including his mother. His mother told her that “some lives are not worth saving”, which drove her to further help Jordan.
Criminologist KC Jordan talks to Mary, and asks her if she believes that Jordan is factually guilty of commiting the disappearance and murders of these young women. She says deep in her heart, she believes he is innocent. Mary has not only paid Jordan’s legal fees, but she has hired her personal attorney to investigate on the cases the murderer is involved in. Although Jordan has confessed to the murder of Stephany Flores, Mary still believes that confessions can be forced, which she believes happened in Jordan’s case. KC says some people are attracted
Natalya is another guest in the show, who’s engaged to a prisoner who won’t be on parole until 2046. her family was originally in Georgia but moved across the country because she fell in love with Brian, a prisoner, and her husband. Natalya says she’s happy and that they feel more like a family now than ever before. KC thinks that Natalya is very sweet but feels like there’s a need for a purpose in her life.
After a straight forward comment from a member if the audience, Mary says that she believes that in helping those who have fallen down in life come back up, then we have truly rehabilitated these criminals. She calls this “transformative justice”. Anderson and Mary get into a heated argument, when Anderson asks if she invites dolphins into her home, too. Mary calls him “silly” and stresses the seriousness of this topic. In the end, Mary says she’s just asking for a “miracle”.another show of Anderson ends, but be sure to come back for more, only here on Nerdles!
